The 37th iteration of Capricon begins this Thursday and is Chicago's only four-day science fiction convention.  Here are the panels I'll be on for Capricon this year.  Looking forward to moderating a lively discussion on two:

What Keeps You in Science Fiction Society? (Willow, Friday, 1 p.m.)
Every year you go to the same conventions, or you keep looking for that favorite author's books, or you clothe yourself as that character you like.  What keeps you participating in science fiction society at large?
Panelists:
Dexter Fabi (mod)
Jason Betts
Jessica Guggenheim
Bill Higgins
Val Hoski

Queer Eye for Sci-Fi: Season 3 (Birch, Friday, 7 p.m.)
Queer Eye for Sci-Fi returns for Season 3! There is a long and complex history of queerness in science fiction, from queer-coded villains in pulp novels to the more diverse spectrum of characterization in the previous decade. Join panelists as they discuss the history of queerness within the genre.
Panelists:
Mari Brighe
Dexter Fabi
Chris Gerrib
Andrea Hawkins-Kamper

Introduction to Classic Movies (Willow, Friday, 8:30 p.m.)
What classic science fiction films are a must see, and why?
Panelists:
Dexter Fabi (mod)
Bill Higgins
Frank Salvatini

Fantasy and Science Fiction in the Silent Film Era (Botanic Garden Ballroom, Saturday, 5:30 p.m.)
A discussion of genre films from this era in movie history, and their influence on later films.
Panelists:
Steven H Silver (mod)
Richard Chwedyk
Brendan Detzner

Hope to see you at Capricon! It's going to be a wonderful convention!

The Importance of Visual Design in Movies and TV - Friday, 02-12-2016 - 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm - Willow

Alien Landscapes on Earth - Friday, 02-12-2016 - 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm - Willow

Science Literacy for All - Sunday, 02-14-2016 - 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm - Botanic Garden

New York

My next art show will be in New York at Lovegun in Brooklyn, on the evening of Thursday, November 5.  This show focuses on human anatomy and the human form.  I will be present, and anticipate as well, dear reader, that you are able to make it to see some thought-provoking artwork.  There will be six pieces of mine in the show.

Being also my first New York show, it holds a deep significance.  New York is the fine arts heart, nucleus, and capital of the U.S., the convergence of the visual and performing arts of the nation.  When I think of New York, I think of Warhol, Krasner, Pollock, Rockwell, Duchamp, and so many more.

There will be mailings, press circulations, and publicity for the first week of October about the show, so I will post those here as soon as I obtain them.  It is a public event and all are welcome.  The event starts at 7 p.m. local time.

For the time being, let's amuse ourselves with an image of Anderson Cooper, journalist and author, at Lovegun.

Drawing near, my next exhibition will be at Side Street Studio Arts in Elgin, Illinois, an exhibit showcasing American artists and their inventiveness with cameras that hold 135 film (something in period style in our era now).  I hope you can attend the festivities this July 4, a Saturday, at 15 Ziegler Court, Elgin, Illinois.  A whole day of activity is planned, and there are sure to be delightful moments.

Americana Jubilee at Side Street Studio Arts Facebook Event

Now, as everyone knows, I primarily work in paint and graphite and focus on handmade art, so conceiving patriotic images (28 of them) to put on a roll of film without resorting to the trite has been very amusing.  I ventured to do what has not been done before in this type of media and to create thought-provoking images.  I, and hope you, are really looking forward to viewing the entire gallery of developed film and the effect it will have on viewers and visitors as well as the reactions to my perceptions of the American experience and experiment.  The history of the United States is reflected in my images, and also, with vision, the future of these great golden shores as well.

I also saw how close the gallery is to the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, of which I had the pleasure of hearing in concert some months ago, and also a street titled, entertainingly, Dexter Avenue.  The proximity is intriguing, and thought I would communicate how charmed I am about it.  The Elgin arts scene is vibrant, alive, and apparently, all the go as well.  This promises to be a thrilling exhibition celebrating our great nation, the United States of America.
